九集•解說：

解說？david darling？ 不，當然不。有些藝術是不可說的。我們談談版本學吧。

david darling 最重要的作品是 ECM 公司的 journal october 和 cycles 兩張。應無異議。之後的兩張 cello 及 dark wood 大約可說是一種氣息，一種味道，而不再是純音符、歌曲。

不過 darling 是有不少別樣面貌的人物，咱們不該簡單化他。比如說，他前幾年常跟一位黃姓的太極拳高手合作演出。可惜這個系列沒有錄音。

早期出身於 paul winter consort，這些錄音今天還不難聽到。當時大伙都瘋狂， darling 也不例外。darling 早期甚至還給美國鄉村音樂家伴奏多年。

近年來在 ECM 公司與他人的合作，大家都很熟悉了。但早期有幾張挺特別的。一九七九年在 Ralph Towner 的唱片上的客串，是 darling 的 ECM debut；不久後錄了自己的獨奏專輯 journal october。而在紐約的法國號手 john clark 專輯上的合作表現郤頗令人失望，問題不在 darling 而在 john clark：此人著實乏味，樂器的特殊性似乎無濟於事。這張唱片已絕版，沒發行 CD。

與挪威的 terje rypdal 的二人合作 EOS 成績中上，不過此碟應極普及，在此就不再播放。

一九八七年他在一般說來挺俗氣的美國 Narada 公司出版的 Amber 專輯，作者署名莫名奇妙地排名在 Michael Jones 之後，其實這是一張不折不扣的 darling 專輯。相當好的成績。我認為 darling 有一種不怕被錯扣上甜俗帽子的勇氣：既有這類配不上 manfred eicher 品味的作品，乾脆拿到別家出版。這個現象很常見，比如瑞士的 andreas vollenweider 和挪威的 oystein sevag 都是。

證明，媚俗的語言不見得非作媚俗的內容。超然的形式不見得能保證超然的成品。

但讓人搞不懂的是，darling 在那種庸俗的新世紀公司 relaxation company 出唱片，真有必要嗎？是否自貶身價？第一張 Tao of Cello，用老子道德經作靈感出發點，也還可以忍受。但老實說，大提琴獨奏讓人一路聽下來心驚肉跳，怕他走音。效果可說是「放輕鬆」之一百八十度的相反。

而今年在 relaxation company 再出的第二張音樂按犘系列，可真無法忍受了。很難不想起國人某公司出的那一大批易經五行養生之類的恐怖音樂。聽好音樂本來就可以修身養性，長生不老，但任何以此目的為名而出的唱片可都是讓人避之唯恐不及的。

在此推薦一張 darling 在 ECM 以外的最佳作品：Eight String Religion。九三年 Hearts of Space 出品。今天好像 CD 絕版不容易買到的樣子，也有幾首曲子是炒 journal october 中的冷飯。但是，但是，sojourn 一曲中八弦電大提琴的特技施展，或者單單那首 REMEMBER ，可值回一切，也可堵住所有人的嘴…
